This precious teaching is one of the Terma texts that were revealed by the great Terton, Ratna Linga, who had practised the sadhana thoroughly and many people were thus benefited and led to the pure land of the Great Compassionate One. Many other great teachers, such as the 7th Gyalwang Karmapa, Chodrak Gyamtso and Karma Chakme also propagated this teaching throughout Tibet.

More elaborations more merits
|
Subsequently, the 8th Situpa, Dharmakara, laid down ritual guidelines according to the tradition of Midrol Ling. He composed the melody of the prayers as well as the way of playing musical instruments, how mandala should be made, and so forth. He had also said that "more elaborations, more merits." which means that the more offering and donation you make, the more merits you will definitely get. Therefore, he urged we should always perform this puja in a highly elaborated and serious manner, so that we can accumulate great amount of merits which would enable us to swiftly achieve ultimate liberation - the perfect Buddhahood.

During the Drubchen, apart from the main puja of the Great Compassionate One, three other pujas are performed at the same time at different cardinal directions of the Monastery. In the east, the Buddha Amitayus puja is performed to supplicate longevity; in the north, the Vajrakilaya puja is performed to subdue obstacles; in the west, the Vajrasattva puja is performed to purify our negativities and bad karma which is the cause of unhappiness and suffering; and the main puja takes place in the south.

Not to step outside the boundary of the Monastery
|
The assembly of the main puja comprises of over a hundred participants, including rinpoches, lamas, and monks, while the other three pujas would each be led by a Vajramaster. Since this is an esoteric and auspicious puja, all the monks and participants of the retreat are not expected to step outside the boundary of the Monastery.
